North Cornwall is blessed with some of the most stunning beaches in Cornwall, which are perfect for family holidays. There are also some great surfing beaches, such as Polzeath and Harlyn Bay.

Watergate Bay
Watergate is a beautiful, west-facing bay with a two mile long stretch of golden sands.

Crantock is renowned and cherished by locals for its large expanse of soft golden sand and little rockpools, perfect for a family day at the beach. This stunning, mile-long beach is backed by sand dunes which children, and fun-loving adults, often find ideal for rolling down. At low tide you can access this beach by walking down the river Gannel, or by driving through the idyllic village of Crantock. Although an easy walk from Newquay, this beach really seems far from the madding crowds. Crantock does have a tidal estuary so the beginner surfer must be aware of possible strong rips and currents, but when the surf is working this beach is fantastic for longboarders.

Lusty Glaze
One of Cornwall’s many hidden gems is this privately owned sandy beach. ‘Lusty Glaze’ is Cornish for ‘A place to view blue boats’. Nestled into high cliffs and lapped by the Atlantic Ocean, this secluded and private haven is perfect for swimmers, surfers and beach lovers. There is a fantastic restaurant on the beach and they also do a b-b-q on the beach each day in the summer.

The Adventure Centre on the beach offers lessons in surfing, coasteering, kite boarding, mountain biking, and much more. Last summer the owners of the beach were offering exhilarating rides on their zap cat! If you are lucky enough to be at Retallack in June, head to Lusty Glaze for the Fat Face Night Surf competition. The final event of this surfing competition is held at sunset on a floodlit beach with displays from professional surfers, live music, good food and a spectacular firework display lighting up the ocean.
